Victoria Hurricanes Return

On Monday, July 12 on the Hurricanes Facebook page, the team announced they are returning to league play in the newly formed, Gulf Coast Association Football. Also during the week, former Head Coach Corey Boyd announced on his Instagram account that he will be returning replacing Jojo Barnes, who passed away in 2020 due to the Corona virus.

The Victoria Hurricanes last played in 2019 in the former Crossroads Amateur Football League. The team, which started out as the Victoria Texans, won CRAFL Bowl III in 2013 as the Texans and CRAFL Bowl VII in 2017 as the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes made it to the 2018 CRAFL Championship game but fell to the Houston Ducks.

Owner Rudy Guzman announced on January 2020 that the team would cease operations. During that time, the world saw a pandemic arise as Covid-19 changed the world including the taking the life of Coach Barnes.

New League Name, Same Great Game

The Crossroads Amateur Football League (CRAFL) began play in 2010 and had quite a ride along the way. League founder and commissioner, Ruben Quintanilla ran the league until 2019. In 2019, the league was turned over to new owners who wanted to re-tool the league. So for the first time in ten years, there was no CRAFL. When 2020 hit, leagues across the state of Texas were either halted or stalled by the global pandemic of the Coronavirus.

Quintanilla couldn’t stay away from the game that he loved so the wheels began turning to bring back the CRAFL. After some thought, he decided that if he was going to make a comeback, it would be under a new league name, the Gulf Coast Association Football or GCA Football.

Quintanilla and his family own and run Pit Stop Express and Lube, located in Victoria. He also runs Quintanilla Entertainment QE. He attended Texas A&M-Kingsville, home of the mighty Javelinas majoring in Business Management.
